Albania, is situated on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe with a coastline at the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea in west (both portions of the Mediterranean sea). It is bordered by Montenegro in north, Kosovo in north east, the Republic of Macedonia in east, and Greece in south east. Albania shares also maritime borders with Croatia and Italy. With an area of 28,748 km².
Albania has a population of 3.5 million people. Capital and largest city is Tirane. Spoken languages are Albanian (official), English, Italian and Greek. Albania has a Muslim majority, other main religions are Albanian Orthodox (20%), and Roman Catholic (10%).
Albania joined NATO in April 2009 and is a potential candidate for EU accession.
The currency of the country is Leke.
